Berkhamsted Hertfordshire UK|
This lovely 57ft Semi-traditional Narrowboat 'Avocet' has been my home for almost six years, and regrettably I am now selling it as I'm moving overseas. The boat was constructed in 2005, and features a lovely floating cottage interior design accommodating up to 4 people. The combined saloon/dinette, at 18ft in length is incredibly spacious and sits forward of the open-plan galley. The interior cabin also has 6 ft 5 of headroom, perfect for those looking for bit more head-space.
Avocet has has had a full survey and BSS done this year not due to expire until 2024, and has been recently blacked. Along with it's various modern features it also has had a brand new, never-used wood-burning stove and chimney fitted this year, a new tunnel light, along with a new toilet and cassette. I also had USB charging ports installed in saloon, and a new easy to use heating system installed, accompanying the existing programmable central heating system.
The boat does not have the name stenciled on, so can be renamed if the owner wishes or be kept in its original name. Either way, Avocet is the perfect boat for a full-time live aboard, someone looking to retire, a family looking for a holiday home, or even someone looking for a well-built beautifully designed project to expand on. My hope is that whoever moves on will cherish her as much as I have, and look after her for years to come.
Here are more details about Avocet:
ENGINE & STERN GEAR
The engine is a Beta Marine B38 Diesel Engine, built by Kubota and marinised by Beta Marine. Cooling is through a sealant tank, ventilated by hull side vents. It has easy access under the decking at the rear of the boat and is controlled by a single lever. The gearbox is a PRM120D with 2:1 reduction to 17inx12in propeller. The Weedhatch is held down by a quick release bar, and is easily accessible through a hinged steel lid in the aft deck.
Twin alternators: 1 x 12V engine supply battery and 3 x 12V cabin batteries all in excellent working condition. Charging also through a 230V with inverter, and two Flexi-solar panels on the roof. There is also a shore power connection and shore power leads (provided with sale if needed). Cabin fittings include 1 12V USB charging port with two USB fittings, and 8 230V power sockets. Also included are a Radio/CD player, 4 speakers with two in the saloon, and two in the bedroom. The cabin also has an aerial socket to internal socket for a television.
STEELWORK AND DECK
The shell is in a semi-traditional style, with the well deck and aft deck being steel and are self-draining. The access to the engine bay and batteries are through a sturdy ply panel, which sits on self-draining bearers in the semi-trad deck. The deck can be covered by a fitted vinyl cover when not in use. The gunwales, well deck and forward/aft cants are finished with slip-resistant surfaces. Brasswork includes tiller and pin, curtain holders and the mushroom vents.
WINDOWS AND DOORS
Five aluminium framed windows, 36in wide and 21in deep provides ample natural light, with 4 additional portholes in the rear of the cabin and bedroom for added privacy. All windows open and their frames are gold anodised. The forward bulkhead carries steel-skinned, glazed doors with interior timber linings.
BATHROOM AND HEATING
The shower has a 28x28in cubicle with curtain and a washbasin with hot and cold taps. The toilet is a brand new fitting with press-button flush, never-used with a new cassette (with wheels and handle for ease of transport). A spare cassette is also provided. The heating is a webasto (previously Mikuno) compact diesel boiler controlled by an on-off switch. The stove is an acorn squirrel wood-burning stove, recently fitted and never-used with a brand new chimney installed as well.
The saloon features an L shaped dinette sofa, with a fold-out table, which also doubles up as a sofa bed with 6ft2 length on the extending L-shape dinette. This is surprisingly comfortable! There is also a double bed in the rear 6ft3 length, and 4ft wide with interior-sprung mattress. The dinette upholstery is red cotton piped, the curtains are cream with a floral print brocade and hung on brass rods with brass retainers. The kitchen also features a cream roll-down blind.
There is ample storage space provided, including two shelves, two cupboards and two drawers in the saloon, one drawer, two shelves and four cupboards in the galley/kitchen, and two cupboards and a shelves in the bedroom. There is also additional space under the L-shaped sofa in the saloon. The sale can also include a quirky suitcase-style chest of drawers if needed! Harp not included.
GAS AND WATER
The gas system includes two 13kg propane gas cylinders, with an easy-to-use manual changeover. The bedroom and stove have two carbon monoxide alarms. The water pump is automatic, and the water heating system is located under the bedroom. The calorifier was recently inspected and an expansion tank was fitted in 2018. The water tank is stainless steel and is approximately 100 gallons. There is an easy to use water screw-cap fitted at the front exterior for filling the tank.
FURNISHINGS AND FITTINGS
All furniture is custom built oak. Doors are oak framed and glazed, privacy doors are oak flat panel, gallery and shower are timber edged laminate and the galley splash backs are tiled. There is minor water damage on the interior ceiling cabin panels, but all mushroom vents have been recently re-sealed and protected. The carpet was re-fitted in 2018 and is an ocean blue, complementing the oak cabin interior in the saloon and bedroom areas. The cabin entrance features a stag-pattern foot rug, and the galley has a wooden panel floor.
COOKER AND FRIDGE
The cooker is a 4 hob gas stove (500DIT 10.3kW drop-in cooker) with 4 burners, a grill with door front, and a separate oven. The oven door features a flame protection and the cooker hob lid acts as an additional gas valve for safety. The main gas valve is located under the galley sink in the cupboard. The fridge is a 12V fridge/freezer in excellent working condition.
The overall length is 57 feet, two inches. Foredeck is 3ft5 and Well deck is 4ft. The overall cabin length is 41 feet, eleven inches. Lengths: Saloon 18ft, the galley 7ft5, the shower room 6ft2, and the bedroom 10ft4. It has a draught of 2ft2 and a gunwale width of 4 inches. Perfect for moving around outside the boat without worry of slipping. The semi-trad deck is 4ft6 and the Aft deck is 3ft4. The headroom as previously mentioned is 6 feet 5, and I can attest being 6 foot 4 that I’ve always been very comfortably standing up in the boat.
FINISHES AND INSULATION
The shell was fitted by CPL Fabrications. The lower hull is coated with bitumen paint, the hull sides above with top rubbing strake finished with black enamel. The cabin sides are painted dark blue with burgundy inner panels and cream coastlines. The cabin roof is painted dark blue with red inner panels, and cream finishes around the mushroom vents. The exterior paint has some minor cosmetic wear-and-tear, but is in otherwise great condition. The cabin is insulated by sprayed polyurethane (pu) foam behind all external linings (except underfloor). Sprayed pu foam is widely recognised as the most thermally efficient of insulation available for narrowboats. It is the only type that also acts as a vapour barrier.
INVENTORY AND HISTORY
The boat has been regularly blacked and has 4 magnesium sacrificial anodes which were replaced in 2018, and the boat was surveyed in 2020 with a new BSS not due to expire until August 2024. In 2021, the boat also had a new tunnel light fitted, a new chimney, a new stove and a new toilet/cassette. The boat also has a horn, lifebuoy, fenders, pole hook, mooring plank on brass rack, windlasses. Sledgehammer, hose, shore power connection leads, and a steel chain and anchor in the front gas aft. The boat comes with a declaration of conformity to the EU Recreational Craft Directive and a list of the inventory items can be provided.
I have also done ample work on the boat getting it ready to sell, including re-sealing the mushroom vents, thoroughly tidying and treating minor cosmetic issues. The boat has had three previous owners, myself included, having owned it since 2015.
LOCATION AND VIEWINGS
The boat is currently moored on the canal near Berkhamsted Railway Station, with easy parking, transport and rail links to London or surrounding areas in the South East. To view please contact me (James) directly through Apolloduck. I work in the events industry, so my timings are very flexible and all viewings can be covid-safe if needed.
